Leggings Design Case Study
The following case study was done for my Design Process course. We were tasked with coming up with a brand that solved a problem, and I chose to create one for leggings. I aimed to tackle the issues of inclusivity and primary pain points that leggings users suffered from.
Project Type: Solo Physical Product Design project
Project Topic: My choice (fashion)
Project Length: 3 Weeks
Software Used: Adobe Illustrator, Procreate, Miro
Deliverables: Design research, Defined scope and strategy, rough sketches, refined sketches, final product sketches, logo design, advertisement design
CONCEPT
Overview: Leggings. There are a lot available, but many of them look / function the same.
Question: What is missing in the leggings market?
Market opportunity: Leggings that stand out and solve problems that other brands fail to.
MOODBOARD
+general observations about colors and style
RESEARCH
I needed to identify pain points directly from users.
Interviews: Given the scope and timeframe of the project, I conducted 3 user interviews.
Interview questions:
How often do you wear leggings? What are your shopping methods?
Favorite brands?
What do you look for in workout leggings?
Do you have any issues with the workout leggings you wear?
What do you think can be improved about your workout leggings?
I also requested that they send a photo of their favorite pair of leggings.
GENERAL USER INFORMATON
DETAILED RESEARCH INSIGHTS
KEY INSIGHTS
These were the main concerns collectively between all 3 users.
COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS
Before I started planning and designing, it was important to look at what already existed and how they fit on two spectrums: usability (good for activity or purely for show) and price / sizing (how inclusive the leggings are on those two scales).
WANTS / NEEDS
I now compared what the users wants and needs were and how the product would meet these needs.
VALUE PROPOSITION STATEMENT
“Our leggings help women who want to exercise stress-free by lessening price / self consciousness and providing versatility, all day comfort, and confidence!”
DESIGN
It was now time to sketch and design both a logo for the brand and products of the brand.
I settled on the name “Sheometry” which combines she and geometry. I chose this because the leggings are meant to be for women of all shapes and sizes, and geometry deals with all shapes and sizes.
LOGO
General logo sketches. Tried to play on the shapes aspect of the brand.
Refined logos, narrowed down with feedback from my professor.
FINAL LOGO
PRODUCT (LEGGINGS)
Primary sketching (versatile color palette, pocket variations)
Refined legging line drawing.
FINAL PRODUCT LINE
with hierarchy depending on intensity of wear. (low to high, left to right)

REFLECTION
What did I learn?
How to go about a design project that deals with a physical product instead of a digital one.
How to go through the full design process with research included.
What it is like to conduct user interviews.
What could have gone better?
If more time was given for the project, I would have liked to do even more user interviews.
The logo is very straight forward and simple, so I could have done even more iterations of that.
It would have been nice to see some sort of interface design for the project if more time was given, like the brand’s website or app.
